No LIRR Strike!

The impending LIRR strike that was looming over all of us in the last few weeks would’ve negatively affected so many Long Islanders if it had come to fruition. Luckily, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced today that a resolution has been reached between the MTA and LIRR union officials regarding their contract disagreements.

LIRR workers, from conductors and machinists to track workers and other employees, have not been working under contract since 2010. Although the LIRR unions haven’t walked off the job en masse in 20 years, given current circumstances they saw few alternatives despite the knowledge that the strike would impact more than 300,000 daily commuters.

Fears of the strike became really real for everyone as we got closer and closer to July 20th. Long Islanders who live in the city had difficulties even imagining how they would get to work come Monday. Imagine putting 300,000 more people on our already traffic-packed highways—I shudder at the thought.

Likewise, the idea of walking off the job wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for LIRR employees, either. “You’re going on strike; you’re not going to get paid,” Vincent D’Agostino, a third-rail worker from Massapequa Park told the NY Times, “I still think it’s the right thing to do, but it’s scary.”

Approximately 5,400 union members have now been saved from having to forgo their paychecks thanks to the resolution. The conversation began late last night, and went on for several hours.

One of the requests being made by the union workers was a wage raise of 17 percent over the next six years. Transportation authority officials had instead offered 17 percent raises over seven years, but that was rejected by the unions. After their long deliberation, the two organizations have agreed upon a 17 percent raise over six and a half years, along with other terms that haven’t been fully disclosed to the public just yet.

This means that the shuttle service that All Island Transportation organized in order to ensure that our loyal customers were able to get to work and wherever else they may have needed to go is no longer necessary. However, we don’t think that our efforts were for naught—in the face of this potential transportation catastrophe, All Island Transportation acted swiftly to provide the reliable service that our regular customers have come to depend upon. We are certain that our loyal customers will remain confident in our dedication to serving you to the best of our abilities.

Thankfully, since there’s no LIRR strike, we’ll see you all on Monday at all of the LIRR stations that we serve!
